We find ourselves looking for the ‘least expensive’ or ‘cheapest’ gas in our local area, but what is the cheapest gas? I can go to many stations that have a lower posted price than the one we normally fuel up at and save a cent per litre or maybe two or three over other posted prices. However, with the points reward system incorporated into the price of my fuel purchases I save five cents per litre plus whatever your credit card offers you as well. Based solely upon posted prices you have one result, based upon benefits you may have another result. So then, what is the best bang for your gas buck?

Stop buying litres and start buying gallons of gas. You get more volume buying by the gallon.

The best bang for my gas buck is a high Canadian dollar, living close to the border and a cash back rewards card. Late evening trip cross the border for gas and dairy and I've saved myself $50+ each trip.

I agree, credit card companies are not in the business to "give" money away. However, they know to make money you need to provide incentives. To purchase using my credit card and pay it off each month costs me nothing - no interest or user charge - hence it's free money to me. They are banking on the premise I will not be paying it off each month - which is money to them in interest charges. Bottom line, the 5 cents per litre from my fuel rewards card and the 2 cents per litre from my credit card makes a difference - no matter how you slice it. The reason for my post is simply it seems so much focus is upon the posted prices and not the out of pocket price when all factors are considered.

After reading what you wrote, JoLarr, I am so confused I am just going to park my car and walk from now on. I'm just so sick of it all. See what you did? If I get hit by a car it will be all your fault.

Cheapest brand is not always the best for economy. I found some stations gas seems to burn better in my car than others. I have also noticed this with my diesel truck.

1 - not traveling too far out of my way to save a penny or two.
2 - Planning my trips
3 - 5% cash back card has beaten the price of cash discount every time thus far.

To believe that a rebate really saves money you would have to believe that the credit card company is looking for ways to give money away.
