I decided to put off the vacation. I went in and attempted to donate Monday, April 15, 2013. It didn't go well, they thought I was too dehydrated to bleed well.

I become eligible to give again on April 12th, but I'm going on vacation before then and my BFF is going to hold down the fort. I could theoretically give in Missouri, but then I'm going to wait until I'm back home. The way I'm planning out the vacation, the first Friday I'll be back here is May 3rd. It's just more time for my iron counts to go higher.
My vacation will be spent driving through Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. I will be proudly sporting my Texas "Be A Blood Donor" license plates personalized with my blood type ("A*POS", where the asterisk is the silhouette of the State of Texas). FWIW, when I last looked, the only blood types left in Texas were B*POS, ABPOS, and ABNEG. The first three donors with those blood types can have at them!

I used to take about twelve weeks to recover until I started taking women's vitamins, now I'm in every eight like clockwork unless I have a cold or I'm out of town. The only difference is the women's vitamins have eighteen milligrams of iron. And they cost no more than men's vitamins.

My next eligibility date is April 12th, but I anticipate going on my spring vacation. Since the blood bank likes Friday and Saturday donations, I suspect I'll next be in May 3rd.
It will give my iron levels more time to recover.

Friday, February 15th. I went into the Web site of The Blood Center and found that they had credited me with having made a donation although they didn't get a full unit. They apparently did the testing on it because all the values were last updated as of Friday. I didn't ask if they would be able to salvage anything out of the donation but I can always hope for the best.

Today. I went in and attempted. It was a difficult process overall. The initial poke hurt more than usual, then when they tried to tape down the line the blood flow stopped. They let the line run fairly loose and the blood flowed well. Then, when I was about half done, the blood in the line clotted before it could get down to the anticoagulant. They tried some maneuvers with a roller tool and they couldn't get the clog to clear. They got enough blood out of me that I'm deferred for another 56 days. My schedule is such that I will be out of town then.

I"m still in the 56-day whole blood donation deferral period. I have an appointment for next Friday, when the 56 days will be over. So, you can say I'm a regular donor.

I should write "products" as they were going to split it into components.

But three of the Neighborhood Donor Centers that are normally closed Sunday, including the one I went to today, will be open that day. So they will have an extra day to collect blood before the two-day break.

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is incenting donors to come in from the 21st of December to the 8th of January. I think I will wait an extra week. Of course, by then, I could get another cold.

Only about 40% of the country is served by Red Cross Biomedical Services. The only places I have lived where the Red Cross collected blood were Columbia (MO) and Wichita (KS). When I lived there, I signed up at work in Wichita to donate, but they never asked me. I lived in the Huntsville (AL) and Abilene (TX) areas and I was never asked. In Houston, the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center gets a lot of free ad time on TV. I thought I would be deferred because of the meds I take but that was not the case. I have given 14 times in Columbia (when I was a college student at the University of Missouri) and 18 times in Houston. I gave 1973-1977 and 2009-now (I'm in the eight week deferral period from a previous whole blood donation and will be until December 7th).

The blood bank in your area is an independent non-profit organization, Florida's Blood Centers. They are open seven days a week for qualified and willing donors.

Some blood banks wil defer donors for MS and/or diabetes, others won't. All of them will permanently defer a donor for using bovine insulin after a certain date (mad cow concerns).

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center would be willing to have you try, but roughly half of people get deferred for various reasons. Only about 5% of people donate regularly.

My BFF freaked out when she caught me with the prenatal vitamins. Just the thing for blood donors to keep their iron levels high.
She freaked out again when she caught me with a box of Kroger Personal Lubricant. There are other uses for the stuff than what she can think of.

Two more days before I can attempt. I usually flunk out because of iron levels on the first try, it averages about 77 days before I recover to normal.

I've only got ten more days to wait until I can donate again.
My on-again, off-again desire to try platelets instead of whole blood is on again. I'm tremulous at rest (this is normal for me) but I think my whole arm would relax. I don't have any problems doing whole blood.

The prohibition against paying blood donors is at the FDA level, so it applies everywhere in the United States. They learned that the blood from volunteer donors was a lot less likely to transmit diseases that can be transmitted via a blood transfusion.
When I was in college (the mid-1970s) they did not have the prohibition but they had to label the source of the blood. I used to help out at the blood drives and the main thing they had me do is label the packs with "BLOOD FROM VOLUNTEER DONOR" and fasten on a couple of test tubes (one red [no anticoagulant] and one lavender [EDTA anticoagulant]) so they would be ready for the phlebotomists to use. I counted the last time I donated and they're up to one red and three lavender tubes to do all the transmissible disease checks they require in 2012.

Decided to try March 2nd instead. Hematocrit 40%, everything else OK.
Now, I can't donate again until April 27th.

Still August 13th of last year. Low hematocrit (36% measured, 38% is the minimum to donate around here).
Going to try again March 3rd unless something happens before then like another cold that kept me away the first two weeks of January.
