jeff: it's not just the current admin. Since 9/11 ppl have clamored for feeling "safe and secure" - well... the tradeoff is that we lost lots of freedoms in the years following 9/11.

No common sense with this liberal left leaning anti business president. Hopefully he will be a 1 term president.

They need to toughen the laws on drivers like that, take their drivers licence away for life and a stiff jail sentence.

jd: freedom is no longer at risk, it has already been partly taken away -- people wanted it that way after 9/11 b/c feeling safe was more important than their freedom.

The two examples given have gone too far, there are consequences for your actions. Some state and city governments have implemented laws and surveillance cameras to monitor traffic and individuals. The TSA Nazi's at the airport are another example where harassing the general traveling public has gone way too far. 12/22/2012!

Be careful about how broad of a brush is used. The laws need to be enforced not enhanced. Freedom is at risk if you let the politicians have their way.

The police, when notified, need to go after a danger to all, before others get hurt.

Laws are only as good as the enforcement. The 2nd DUI should require community service working with auto accident victims and suspended license. The 3rd DUI should carry jail time and revocation of license. 4th DUI should require automatic 5 year prison time.
People who continually scoff at the law and place others in mortal danger are a menace to society and should be separated from the public.

Maybe prison isn't the right choice but there should be some kind of disciplinary action such as community service. Maybe they could be assigned to assist in the emergency room of a hospital so they can see what happens when driving impaired. At present there seems to be very little incentive for them to not drive without a license.

If they stopped siphoning the funds from the road budgets we'd be in better shape.

Yesterday I thought cutting the right leg off just above the knee would be a good solution today, I feel a cinder block wired to each of the dummies feet would be as effective and cost less.

You cannot put enough cops on the road to stop this kind of driving or any other kind of distracted driving.

Short of chaining this guy to a wall nothing will stop him from driving. As for the woman, she is too dumb to have a license.

This story was here yesterday, but yeah, these people should have been in jail, not free to get behind the wheel again.

No, laws like this don't protect you, defensive driving does. Adding more laws isn't going to change things either. By definition, the person is IMPAIRED! Do you think any law, new or otherwise, is going to change that state of affairs and keep them from getting behind the wheel? WTF were either of these people doing free? Why weren't they still in jail from the original occurrence? If we can't use the laws we have effectively, what good are more.

What are our jails too full? That is right California had to release a bunch of criminals after the courts said let them go.

how about confiscation of the vehicles used in the commission of a crime?
it's done for dope peddlers. these idiots are no less dangerous
if they want to keep driving buzzed, make them buy a new vehicle every time they're caught DUI
or there's this other thing called prison

Some people just don't get it. Thay should nevre be allowed to drive again. They will do it again and again until they hurt or kill someone. Some never learn.

I worry more about being protected from stupid Police.Around eight years ago I pulled my Suburban over to the right shoulder and stopped. An on comming car. A small car driving on the wrong side of the road with high beams still managed to hit my stoppedSuburban.A dumb Dutchess County Deputy did not listen to me as I told him I was on the right shoulder and stopped. He was shining a flash light in my eyes. The EMT asked how I knew the cop. He said he knew me.The EMT also said the flash light was a field sobriety test.A woman half my age and half my weight was driving on the wrong side of the road with high beams hit my truck was unaware I was stopped, and traveled several hundred feet and rounded a curve before stopping.By the time I walked to where she stopped I observed her carrying on with two young guys who came out of a house.I did not knot the girl who appeared high as a kite laughing and giggleing was the driver and the sober guys wer passers-by.The cop never had her checked for DUI. I was given the flashlight test several times!

These are two examples of the type of individuals that need to be taken off the road by force if needed.. The next big thing is TEXTING just as bad as DUI..

As far as putting repeat offenders in the klink, analyzers on starters or confiscating cars - depending on the priors. If gov't can go so far as consider banning smoking outside (that's right in Ont. have selected bans to outside areas like patios, playgrounds & prov. parks - I agree with all but maybe the last one), then DUI's deserve more. By the way I'm a converted non-smoker & still think this ones crazy & unenforceable!!!

There are too many chronic drunk drivers who are allowed to continue driving. Enforce the existing laws.

"Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Coal-powered plants, you know, natural gas, you name it, whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers." ~~ B. Hussein Obama, San Francisco Chronicle - January 2008
