Just shifting earlier and driving the posted speed limits. I use the cruise control a lot too. I get about 48 MPG. Before I got about 42.

My 1200 sporty has a stage1 air filter. I put SE 2s on and my mileage went from 35 to 40, I will see what a set of Thunderbolt heads will do for it.

My `04 FXDWG-I was at about 30-33 when new. First I added the K-N air filter and drilled the muffler baffles out, leaving the stock mufflers intact but gutless. That raised the mileage to 35-37 mpg. Still not satisfied with the fuel economy, I added the stage I and had it re mapped. Immediately the mpg jumped to 49-54 highway, which isn't at all bad. Of course I'm not the first one off the line either, but enjoy the 70-80+ mph on the open road.

My biggest reason for gas mileage going up is after I had the pipes, dyno, SE stage 1, and race tuner put on, I stopped riding like a "Bat out of hell" and stopped trying to be the first off the line and at every stop light or stop sign. I just ease on and off the throttle all of the time now and just putt around.
I still travel on the interstate at 75-80 MPH, but I just gradually get up to that speed. When I started doing this, my mileage went up 4-5 MPG. Who would have "thunk" that this was going to be this would be so much better for my gas mileage. I knew it would help a little, but never thought that it would increase this much.

I have an average of 39mpg with my '06 Superglide and 43 with my '05 Ultraglide. Obviously being out on the highway gives much better mileage than city driving. I'll run anywhere between 70 and 80 on the highway.

wow, you guys are getting good fuel economy!
my 2007 FLSTN started out about 33-35 mpg, now with 2500 miles (slightly broken in?) I'm seeing more around 37 mpg. 40's and 50's are unthinkable.
this is the stock 96" motor with stock everything (so should be running lean...ie better mileage, right?)
oh, and i cruise in easy mode, rarely exceeding 65-70 mph, gentle throttle and brake...it's a cruiser, after all :)

I get high 40s to low 50s on my '30 FLHTCU-I. Free flow mufflers and K&N air filter, rest is stock, just went over 50,000.

carusle: You get high 40's! I have an '03 FLHTCUI with stage 1. 100 yr. anniversary model and only get about 40-43 when driven on the highway, less when driven in town. How the heck do you get high 40's?!

Look at the Air Pump concept. Free breathing in and out then your riding style. Easy acceleration (I find that impossible so I pay the price)and smooth operation. Other then that enjoy the ride. If fuel mileage is your concern get a Vespa.

Same things that work in a car buddy!
slow accelerations, gentle stops, slower speeds, proper air psi, limit excessive idling, properly tuned-up.

My FLHT gets high forties, I guess I never think of improving the MPH. Not my main goal with the bike.

Most Harleys with carburetors come from the dealer tuned too lean. This is to stay in the emissions limitations. Gives you a little hesitation when you twist the throttle. To get rid of that hesitation you must change the main jet to get the mixture more rich. More rich less MPG. You have to make the mixture richer add a more efficient air filter and reduce backpressure at the exhaust. That will make the engine more efficient and it will have more HP. Could give you slightly more MPG if the thrill when you twist the throttle does not get to you.
