Call me a tightwad. I just bought a new Harley Sportster 883L and the manual says to use at least 91 octane gas. Mid grade is 89 and Premium is 93. Will it damage my engine to use the mid grade? I have thought about alternating by filling up when I am at about half a tank, using 93 one time and 89 the next. Is this nuts or what?

I've talked to people who swear theirs run just as well with regular as with premium. I tried it once. Mine didn't. I have run midgrade, but find that overall, it runs better on premium, so I stick with that.

I put 92. Better safe than sorry. With gas prices as high as they are it may be tempting to go lower.

One too many to drinks at Myrtle Beach bike week and a tank of lograde in my 04 heritage with a stage II and SE pipes equaled to a crappy idle and at slow speed riding. Solution was a bottle of octane booster. Octane booster was $4.13 with tax........ $3.89 per gallon x 4 gallons = $15.56 for gas + $4.13 for octane booster = $19.69 which equaled more than the 91 octane @ 4.09 X 4 gallons = $16.36.Stick

You should start another thread on this, but to answer the question, depends on how loud you speak of. I think it's fine if they are loud enough to draw attention when gunning it, but not too loud as it is annoying going through neighborhoods.

Trust your owners manual. If you were driving a corvette, would you feed it any grade of fuel, or would you give feed it what the manufacture recommends and expect performance in return.

Same for big twin Harley's!

Gonna have to agree with everyone else here on this one. A new engine will cost you well over $2,500 to replace. You won't even spend close to that in an entire year by putting the proper grade of gas in your Harley. I paid $4.159 per gallon the other day in my 08 Street Glide and paid $4.099 per gallon in my wife's 06 1200C Sportster this morning. It's not being a tightwad, it's being smart and taking care of the ride that takes care of you.
Put the proper grade of octane in your Harley and don't worry about the extra $.60 - $.90 per tank. You can find that kind of change in the cusions of your furniture at your home.

At 3.3 gallons what are you gonna spend 11.50 to 12.00 to fill the tank. Use the 91 octane or higher. I've ran premium in my stock 98 sporty 1200 custom and have tried 87 and 89, I didn't like the the way it ran on 87 and 89 octane.

yeah, how big is your tank? My FLSTN is only 5 gal, so assuming a 12 cents difference between mid grade and premium, I would be saving 60 cents per fill-up. Is that worth potential engine damage for you?

Yes, put in what they say to put in, whether it be a motorcycle or cage, always follow the manual. If nothing else, you'll get better gas mileage, so what you gain by using a lower grade fuel you'll lose in mileage and performance. Depending on the size of your tank, it only cost an extra $.90 to $1.50. That's with a $.30 differential between regular and premium.
