Can anyone tell me what are the best all wheel drive cars? I had a BMW 325xi all wheel drive, but they will not be making it again for 2006. I need a car that performs well in the snow...as I drive over 100 miles a day to and from work.

Thank you.

All wheel drive dot really needed in snow if you drive in areas cleared

Very stable. Helpful under duress conditions. Lose of fuel economy - but good for safety reasons.

My 530 does great in the snow without all-wheel drive. I was shocked... main issue is clearance...

I've had the 2003 325xi...
2007 328xi...
and now the 2008 528xi and they are all
very strong and handle well in the snow.
Of course it helps to have all season tires
for good traction!

I'd say go for a Subaru. Yes there are some concerns with certain model engines see here
subaru 2.5L engines
I had my wrx wagon for 6yrs without any major problems.

Well that depends if you want to stick with a foreign or domestic. I recommend you an Audi quatro A4 A6 and since you drive so much see if you can find a 1.8T quatro for better gas mileage. If not an Audi then Merce-Benz 4matic.

HFE,

Not sure I would agree with you. I've seen many rwd cars including the BMW & MB struggle to make it up a slight incline here in major roads like the Garden State Parkway. A good set of snow tires will definitely help, but if you stick with the all season tires, not sure this vehicle would be my first choice in the snow.

A rear wheel BMW will be fine in snow.

Lots of choices now for AWD.

Audi (all models)
Subaru (all models)
Lincoln MKZ / Mercury Milan / Ford Fusion

Plus others...

We had two different BMW 325i's with rear wheel drive and they were pathetic in the snow. We just purchased an Audi A4 AWD as have yet to play in the snow, but it is to be quite an impressive AWD system.

i have a 325i with traction control and didn't have a single problem driving in 8" of snow in maine last christmas. in fact, with the traction on, it wouldn't even let me spin wheels and do donuts... had to disengage it for that fun stuff. i was quite impressed.

Subaru's engine is the only convern. They do not last as long as either Toyota or Honda.

I went through the same decision-making process two years ago. Back then I considered practicality, cost and size before anything else; that eliminated SUVs from the start. I ended up buying a used 2000 Subaru Outback that I enjoyed so much that I bought a 2001 for my son. I've not regretted either purchase for any reason - they're reliable, safe, peppy and even fun to drive. Gas mileage averages 21-23 mpg, but that's the penalty you pay for AWD. If I were in the same position today I don't think I'd change my thinking.
