OP: Most BMW cars over $100,000 are larger, more powerful, and swallow gas quickly. Smaller cars for the most part get better gas mileage such as the 3 series, and those USUALLY run under $100,000.

gazol D, you have a diesel BMW. Diesel cars usually have a better fuel economy compared to their gas counterparts. That being said, most 3 series today have decent mileage. Nothing compared to their more economical competitors, but you pay to have a BMW... both up front and in repair costs. :P

My '97 3.28i is still going strong. However she gets around 23-27 on the highway and dismal street performance (16-18mpg). My 2001 Corolla gets 32-38 on the highway, but she lacks the umpf and power of the BMW. It's a tradeoff, but with exorbitant gas prices now... i'm sticking with my Corolla. When gas prices stabilize at $2-3 / gallon I might start using the BMW more often, but I do take her for a spin once in awhile :)

I drive a 2011 BMW 335d. I took possession of it on 26 May 2010. Last week I travelled from Sacramento CA to San Diego CA on freeways (US-99, CA-58, US-395, I-215, I-15). I drove with my radar detector ON @ about 80mph +/- 5 mph. My fuel-consumption efficiency as 40.5 mpg. I drove around the San Diego area for 5 days which reduced fuel efficiency to 35.8 mpg. The return trip to Sacramento was a different route through Yosemite National Park (I-215, I-15, US-395, CA-120, CA-49, CA-16) to home in Sacramento. Fuel consumption efficiency for the entire 1274 miles was 36.1 mpg. Except for the part of the trip from the turnoff to CA-120 from US-395 to CA-16, my usual speed was 80mph (using cruise control, my radar detector, and common sense). I have been driving in and around Sacramento for 4 days and the efficiency still hovers at 35.8 mpg. The trip required almost two full tanks of diesel #2 @ $3.99 - $4.12 per gallon (currently less expensive than regular gas in CAlifornia!!!

I'd buy another diesel-powered CAr in a trice. Probably a BMW.

If you have $100,000 to spend on a car do you really worry about the fuel mileage. My BMW 740 doesn't get great mileage but it is a great ride.

I get 22-23 so that is fair, it gets higher on highway, so I could get better than that maybe.
(--maybe if my foot was lighter also)

I didn't think "economy" with my very first thought, it's a BMW 5 series.

One of my other cars gets better mileage and it is about the same size, (few inches larger I think) it gets 23-27 on regular unleaded, so I often commute in it (Olds Intrigue GLS) and its set-up like the BMW (loaded), I run premium in the BMW too, but I enjoy my BMW.

BMW makes a good automobile.

Whats with the $100,000 figure?, -if mine was $100k, I wouldn't care what the mileage was at that point.

My 2010 335i averages about 24.5 in mixed city/hwy driving. It'll get in the 29 MPG range on long road trips. On my most recent road trip, it got just over 30 MPG. That was because I mixed in about 6 gallons of ethanol free gas.

My '06 M Series Roadster gets reasonable mileage for what it is...and what it is, is fun!! It is a double overhead cam, 24 valve 3.2 liter, 330 hp engine that runs on premium only. 6-speed manual transmission. Mileage is better than the rating. I get 18-20 around town and 21-25 on hwy depending on speed, traffic, hills, etc. And it's way under $100,000

'94 530i. It's mostly for city commuting, so it's a bit thirsty (right now 17MPG average), but on the highway it sips fuel (30-ish MPG @ 100 km/hr, only slightly less at 120 km/hr). It's a car that was really designed for high speed highway use.

Confirming that 335d gets very good fuel mileage. 34.5 mpg - or 100 gallons for 3,475 cross-country miles at some very high speeds, as well as city crawling, and some really run twisty back-roads. And that 100 gallons cost $289 total. Took five days.

Take a look at the new 335d. It's a high performance diesel engine that's rated to get 36 MPG highway.

06 330i 6spd.

28-33 mpg mixed driving, using conservative driving methods and depending on traffic.

22-25 when I'm having fun.

20 or less when I get stupid (not very often). I know I opening myself up there.

All in all they can get good MPG if try, and it depends on the model you buy, as you can see from the previous posts.

For the roughly 6k miles I drove from Seattle to the BMW plant in Spartanburg, SC and back my OBD showed 24mpg and that included some 100+ mph thru WY & SD. This was with an '88 535is and I'm sure they're better now...

Land Rovers have never gotten good gas mileage unless it was a turbo diesel which we can't get over here. My Discovery does about 12 - 14 mpg in the city. Hwy maybe 19mpg if I have a tail wind.

I get about 18mpg on an '03 745li. I live in New Tampa so all I see is stop and go traffic so that doesn't help. On highway, I can get 24-26mpg. This is better than my Range Rover which averages about 14mpg (city).

Do you want a Bimmer or a Beamer? Beamers have 2 wheels and don't come with a "milegage". Bimmers have 4 wheels and most late models come with a good "milegage". Mine has worked well over 225000 miles and is still working. Haven't found a new BMW over $100000 yet, and you can hook up a "milegage" to most cars... they work on vacuum.

Like others have said, it depends on what your benchmark for good gas mileage is.

I just bought a 335i and so far city driving has yielded about 27 mpg. I did a long distance trip and so far I'm looking at about mid 30's for hwy mileage. For a 300hp engine, this is pretty damn good if you ask me...but no this is not a $100k car.

pera said: "depends on what 'good' gas mileage is for you ... if you're willing to spend at least 100,000 for a vehicle, honestly - would you even have an issue with high gas prices or how your vehicle consumes gas."

Where'd you get the idea that BMWs cost "at least 100,000"? They certainly aren't cheap, but the majority of BMWs sold fall below half that. They're even cheaper if you buy used, like I did.

BTW, folks, plurals don't use an apostrophe-s. Thus, BMW is "BMWs" -- *not* "BMW's."
