Google Street View car case closed with FCC $25,000 fine

SlashGear -- Way back in the year 2010 Google was accused and essentially found guilty of (perhaps accidentally) using their Google Maps street mapping cars to collect personal information from Wi-fi networks. As they drove through your neighborhood, they collected all the data there was to be had floating around the area – or so that’s what the situation seemed to be when Google explained that they were “mortified by what happened” when the news broke. Now the Federal Trade Commission is fining Google saying that they had “deliberately impeded and delayed” an investigation into this situation – this fine totaling $25,000 this month.

There is nothing private about it. You made the choice to have a WiFi signal, so people will see that you are broadcasting. These people can be anyone who drives by. Your neighbor, commuters, me, the government, even Google. I can see the private network of the hotel down the street, the apartment building near by, and several of my neighbors. Any of them can also see my network. You may consider your WiFi to be private, but it is not. Google was not hacking into the networks. They were simply logging what network was where. And you freely broadcasted it to them, and everyone else. Any fine for this is outrageous.

A total invasion of expected privacy” How is that? What privacy do you expect when you send unencrypted data from a public wi-fi network? I would not expect any. Anyone driving past our place can detect our LAN but they cannot access it without a 60-character security code.
