Alternative Fuel Stations Approach 10,000 in the U.S.

GasBuddy Blog -- A new report from the Energy Information Addministration (EIA) says that although gasoline remains, by far, the dominant transportation fuel, the use of alternative fuels currently in use is growing. But, the majority of that usage is by government and private fleets.

These fuels include: electricity, propane, higher ethanol-gasoline blends (E85), hydrogen and natural gas. Altogether there are now about 10,000 alternative fuel stations in the U.S. and about 160,000 gas stations nationwide.

The report notes, for instance, that bio-diesel fuels (which differ in the proportion of petroleum diesel and bio-based fuel) are used primarily in private and government fleets only, and of the 347 private access stations, nearly...

If fails to tell what the profit of these stations is, and that would have to be what is profit after the tax infused (that is what it cost us taxpayers) is removed.

What is important is how many of each type are available to the public and how they are distributed. If you own a hydrogen fueled vehicle with a range of 300 miles, you want to be have a hydrogen refuel station available within 100 miles in all directions.

You need a place to refuel so people can get past that first tankful or charge. You need cars to make the station profitable.

There are more than 10,000 gas stations in North Dakota.That is not an impressive feat. When it gets to 100,000,000then alternative fueled vehicles might have some appeal and the price drops significantly.
