Harris Poll says: Speedway, Costco receive best gasoline retail ratings

GasBuddy Blog -- When it comes to gasoline retailing and what brand names mean to consumers, some of us may say we're loyal to a particular brand for one reason or another, while others say "Whoever's got the lowest price is the one that gets my business!"

Certainly all of those retailers want to make the right impression to gain your business and your trust, but some are making a better impression than others.

According to the National Association of Convenience Stores, as Americans speed through their busy days, many shop at convenience stores with some that are stand-alone and many that are retail gas stations. In the inaugural year for the "Convenience Store Brand of the Year", Speedway takes the top spot, followed by Arco am/pm and...

If you don't have a Speedway in your area, be thankful!

They're the scourge of the Midwest... Jacking prices 35 cents a gallon a pop, which their competitors follow, then slowly trickle down a few cents at a time to be competitive, once everyone else matches their hike.

They/we call it the 'Greedway Effect'.

Odd how all the brands can stay in sync with their price hikes, within minutes in an area, and it not be collusion on their part!

of course, it's high turnover that keeps fuel "good" (i.e. no water in the tanks) and Costco can subsidize on top w/ money made in the wholesale part of the operation (i.e. the reason ppl shop at Costco).

I go cheap but buy from places I know don't have bad gas (Raceway has gasoline that makes my engines run terribly).

On the diesel end, I buy ONLY from stations w/ high volume sales.

We don't have Speedway here, but I usually fill up at Costco when I'm in that part of town, never have had trouble with their gas.

However Dennis, there are the first to raise the price and at least in Ohio, all stations in the entire state will go up to the same price. Hmm, price fixing??

Speedway is usually one of the first stations to jump up their prices first.Costco and Sam's Club are usually cheaper but that doesn't always hold true either.

I used to go to GREEDWAY they weren't higher than anyone else and thought their reward program was good. But all of them went to pre-pay around here which creates more hassles in using their rewards program plus they are now always the highest prices. Greedway also bought out Gas America and now we have two in this small town. I have switched to Kroger and enjoy better prices and much less hassles in using discount programs. I will still go where the price is the lowest.

Costco and Arco usually match prices around here but I would take Costco hands down. Fred Meyer (Kroger) with their rewards cards will usually beat both and about 99% of the time beat Safeway. Walmart closed their station.

Costco's got it all. Great brand name & loyalty, great products and customer support, AND almost always the lowest gas prices...plus if i use my Costco Amex card to fill up, with the 3% cash back, it's like getting another 12cents off per gallon!
