A loose fuel cap doesn't trip the check engine light on my 2007 truck which has a diesel engine.

Get it checked out.
I use a USB OBD II Scanner I recently picked up... offers me a lot of capabilities for not a lot of money. Particularly compared to a standalone unit.

Pull over and check to see if my gas cap is on tight first. If it is,I'll drive it home and scan it with my code reader.

The first thing I would do is check the gas cap to make sure it was on correctly.

Mine came on and I hooked up my laptop to it and the code stated that I am getting an intermediate signal from the coolant temperature sensor. Fluids are fine and the engine is not running hot. Checked the electrical connector, used some dielectric cleaner and the problem was resolved.
I have the same software that the dealer uses and I can get updates free online so why tale it to the dealer and pay them $65 just to say there's nothing wrong and have the light come back on a few miles down the road?

I would take it to AutoZone or Advance Auto so they can put that machine on it to see what the problem is.

Try Advance Auto franchise first, they will diagnose free in hopes you'll buy the cure there.
Fair Enough I think as dealers take you to the cleaners for their "minimum diagnosis fee"

Make an appointment to have it checked out. Usually it means it's time for an oil change on my van.

If the vehicle was running OK, I would pull over and do an under the hood check, and then take it to be checked out. If the engine was hot or misfiring, I would shut it down pronto and call for a tow.

If it is serious enough, then I would take it in to get checked; but if it is not serious, I would wait to see if the problem goes away.

If the car is running OK, I would continue to my destination, then have it checked out by the dealer. If not, call for help!
