6 Stocks to Benefit From Truckers’ Switch to Natural Gas

CNBC -- By: Frank Byrt
Analyst

With $4-a-gallon gas and diesel at the pumps now and their prices sure to rise, natural gas is looking like a sure bet to replace diesel as the fuel of choice for the nation’s high-mileage truck fleet.

Given the boom in North America’s production of natural gas, there is a glut of it and it is selling at low prices not seen in a decade. Once converted to compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG) for use in compatible engines, it costs about 42 percent less than diesel on a per-gallon basis. The Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration forecasts that this difference is likely to be long-lasting.

So far, natural-gas-powered long-haul trucks haven’t been a practical alternative to diesel,

We're not very far away from affordable alternative energy. These stations are being installed now.

Some of them have been good investments for me lately. I'm sure they'll be good investments on a continuing basis for a while.

Great article! The high cost of crude (and ultimately diesel) has given these forward thinking companies the incentive to make the switch to LNG and CNG. While Cummins builds the engines for these vehicles, PACCAR designs and builds the trucks, and Clean Energy Fuels adding the fueling stations for CNG throughout the country, we have a natural relationship of companies providing services for their customers WITHOUT government subsidies.

When people are free to SERVE others, America will solve the problems created by big government and will make a profit while bringing the price of fuel down for their customers. I wish all six of the companies mentioned in this article good success for a prosperous future.

MORE,

Yes, we are a long way from affordable alternative forms of energy, but in 1912, err, 1922, (oops I mean 1932) very few believed that an aeroplane could fly over the Atlantic Ocean from the United States and land in Paris, France.

I just wish gas for vehicular use was widely available. I will buy a natural gas car as soon as I can fuel it consistently.

We need to be using our own USA produced natural gas instead of importing oil.
