Cheaper gas spurs more travelers this Memorial Day

AP -- NEW YORK (AP) -- More Americans will hit the road this holiday weekend than a year ago. And they'll have a bit more money to spend thanks to lower gas prices.

Memorial Day kicks off the summer travel season, and since pump prices never reached $4 or $5 a gallon, as feared, economists says travelers are likely to dine out or shop more once they pull off the road.

About 30.7 million people will drive more than 50 miles for Memorial Day trips, according to auto club AAA. That's 400,000 more than last year, a jump AAA attributes to improvement in the economy and consumer attitudes. The number of holiday travelers grows to 34.8 million when you include planes, trains and other means of transportation.

A drop in gas prices encouraged Americans to spend more at restaurants and bars in April

I believe AAA is wrong perhaps as little as 20 million will travel 50 miles or more with most Americans staying local in there state under the 50 mile mark.

To many, Memorial Day is the unoffical start of summer. But it is also a day of remembrance — particularly of our service men and women.

Staying home. Although gas prices have come down a little, they are still at a ridiculous $3.50 per gallon. Who can afford this?

Gasoline prices continue to drop in Lower Mississippi and on the Gulf Coast. Prices today in Laurel is $3.28 per gallon and on the coast the price is just above $3.00. Still have two days of Memorial Day. Weather is outstanding.

We predicted that the price of gas would go up this weekend, just because that is usually how things go at the beginning of the summer vacation season. We're glad that the market swung the other direction. Let's hope the price of gas keeps going down, just as it did in 2008 after that spike.

Humblepie,

And likewise, a few cents a gallon should not be the reason to cancel your plans.
