New Lincoln hybrid cost at $35,180

The Detroit Free Press -- BY BRENT SNAVELY AND TODD SPANGLER
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITERS

Eager to claim a bigger stake in the luxury car market, Lincoln is about to use an aggressive pricing strategy with an environment-friendly, gas-electric hybrid vehicle, the 2011 Lincoln MKZ.

Next month, the vehicle will appear on lots with a $35,180 sticker -- $795 below the price for a competitor, the 2011 Lexus HS 250h.

Car critics who drove the new MKZ last week published their first impressions today.

Toyota and its Lexus luxury brand dominate the U.S. gasoline-electric hybrid market with 69% sold in the first eight months of 2010. Ford was a distant second at 19.3% with its Escape/Mariner SUVs and Fusion/Milan sedans.

Lower gas prices have helped cut hybrid sales by 11% in the U.S. this year.

It is more than $10 K above the Prius, and Buddies were complaining it was too expensive.

That is a big price. How long would it take to see the return on that investment?

That's been Ford's strategy - build a better car and under-cut the competition. Just look at the Taurus SHO commmercials on their website.

One is of the V6 Ecoboost SHO spanking a V8 Audi.

Another is of the superiority of the Taurus SHO's paint against rock-shipping against the Lexus.

And there are several others, all ending with a comparision to the cost of the competition they just buried.

How is all this electricity going to be produced once hybrids really become popular? Obama said he was going to tax coal to death and that is how most of our electricity is produced.

All car makers should HAVE TO provide an alternative fuel option vehicle at a reasonable price.

Wait -
This car, a luxury car, with a battery system and a gas engine, is over $5000 less than the Volt!
For $5000 you can drive, and drive is style, for a very long way!

And I know you'll point out the $7500 govt kick back that the buyers will get - so what. This car is still heads over the Volt.
