Residents urge fracking ban

warwickadvertiser.com -- Residents as well as members of Sustainable Warwick and Community 2000 have asked the Town Board to exercise home rule and ban hydraulic fracturing in Warwick.

The practice of extracting natural gas from shale basins deep within the earth is commonly referred to as fracking although it bears little resemblance to the process of 50 years ago. These days fracking consists of drilling horizontally, clustering well pads together and using high volumes of water.

Citing myriad public health and safety concerns, residents believe a ban is the town’s best option and can always be reversed in the future.

“A growing number of banks won’t give new mortgage loans on homes with gas leases and [some insurers] won’t cover damage from fracking,” added Makofske, who believes the board should heed

PDQ...I have a lot of faith in people in general. Some maybe tempted by money, but there are many more who care about the future of their families, their grandchildren, and the planet.

miiike572: why not let individual people make the choice since it is their property instead of having big bro tell them yes or no.

When large corporations with truckloads of money speak, politicians listen and US voters don't stand a chance.

If they think hydrocarbons are bad for their health, they should stop using gasoline, diesel and natual gas produced elsewhere. If you're going to stand on your principles, then do it.

They are fearful that Fracking will do the same as underground coal mining has done to the coal region. They have a good reason to be concerned. i hope the State, Local and Federal agencies conduct fair and proper regulation and inspections. The project can be done without problems if regulated properly!

Once again, those fracking oil lobbyist bastards have paid off the New York state legislators to allow this stupidity to prevail. Let them frack next door to the legislator's backyards and see how long that lasts. ALTERNATIVE ENERGY is the only logical choice.

Note that the water table still remains above the layers where the drilling takes place. The sloppy habits of a few (we need to relax regulations Republicans) will kill it all for the rest of us.

Forget all the jobs and the money that gas would bring to the local economy. Some woman in Warwick isn't sure nat gas is as clean an alternative as advertised. That's a good reason to shut down a billion dollar operation.

If it TRULY can't be done safely, then just drop it and forget about it. But that doesn't mean there will never be a way to achieve energy independence.
