Study: Keystone Pipeline Would Raise Gas Prices

Huffington Post -- WASHINGTON -- The Natural Resources Defense Council on Tuesday released a report dispelling the myth that the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline would lower gas prices. Rather, the opposite is true, findings show.

On a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, report author and NRDC attorney Anthony Swift called the pipeline's impact on gasoline prices "one of the most misunderstood issues surrounding the proposed Keystone XL," adding that when TransCanada originally proposed the pipeline, they pitched it as a way to increase the cost of oil in the United States, providing increased revenue for Canadian producers. Since then, proponents of the pipeline in the United States have pitched it as a means of decreasing U.S. gasoline prices.

Swift's study examined these two conflicting cl

You think the National Resources Defense council is worried about the price at the pump?

Or do they want to kill the pipeline for environmental reasons, and grasping for any reason they can to support their position?

Over the last little while, so much rhetoric has passed through the news sewers, the truth has been severely soiled, so much so, if it was to reappear, it would never be recognized.

Why is everybody jumping hatefully, on the Huffington Post; calling them communist, is ludicrous; they are not, the authors of this left wing report; that dubious distinction remains with Natural Resources defense council.

The vast amount of this oil, will be the Albertan tar sands and it will be combined with the N.Dakota crude for furtherance to the oil refineries on the Gulf coast (as far as I believe). Not sure where this rhetoric started saying refined petroleum will be exported. No one is sure where it's going; we are sure it will be on the market somehow; that in itself, should lower market prices. If it should be exported; what does that really mean/matter; if crude, originated in Canada, then American refineries (due to excess refining capacity) refines the Canadian portion; why should the Canadian portion be controlled by the Americans. Yes, your refining, the N.Dakota crude and you control that; not sure why some here think you can then control the Canadian refined petroleum. If we sent it back to Canada or to the U.S North east or Atlantic coast, or we ship to the UK or Europe or wherever; that should be the Canadian prerogative. Some will elude to the tale of shipping to China; seems somewhat of a long roundabout route to travel to China. I really, wish people with agendas would quit twisting things; we are lost without the truth; refrain, from
that, as it is meant to inflame and to get the upper hand in some construed argument.

I've seen some pretty convoluted logic in my day, but this one beats all. Apparently the author never heard of the law of supply and demand.

The premise of this article flies in the face of logic... as a rise in oil supply will lead to a rise in costs for that commodity? Easily the most ridiculous article ever written, and proves that just because someone wrote something doesn't mean its true. Complete lunacy here!

Results of studies are predetermined by the political agenda of the authors. Huffington's political perspective negates any objectivity in explaining conflicting reports.

leraar2: it's all going to be exported anyway; so no benefit to US consumers.

All too true, leraar2. Sadly, some members lack the intelligence to understand this point. Now, if Congress passes a law that stipulates that the US will get some large portion of this oil, then hell yeah, go for it. No chance of that happening.

From the article..."That's because if Midwestern refineries are forced to pay a higher price for oil, as East Coast refineries already do, they will be forced to respond by reducing their production and further decreasing U.S. gasoline supplies, according to the report." Yes that is the right way to do business. If it cost you more you refine less? Would make more sense to refine more to produce more product to increase profits.

I'm sure the people in the midwest will love the price hikes you are asking for......Van Halen...

To quote.....
"Other findings in the report include that the pipeline will increase the price of crude oil in the Midwest and Rocky Mountains by over $20 a barrel, increasing the cost of Canadian tar sands by as much as $27 billion annually. These higher crude oil costs are expected to lead to deteriorating financial conditions in Rocky Mountain and Midwestern refineries, which could in turn result in decreased production. That's because if Midwestern refineries are forced to pay a higher price for oil, as East Coast refineries already do, they will be forced to respond by reducing their production and further decreasing U.S. gasoline supplies, according to the report.

So Van Halen... even the reports points to price hikes due to supply and demand....

"The report found the pipeline will increase U.S. gasoline prices by three mechanisms, most immediately by reducing the amount of gasoline produced in the United States.
The pipeline will divert crude oil from Midwestern refineries, which are designed to produce as much gasoline as possible from a barrel of oil, to Texas Gulf refineries, which are designed to produce as much diesel as possible from a barrel of oil.
The result in the immediate to short term will be a decline in gasoline production and an increase in diesel, according to the report.

If any posters are actually interested in the facts. Use the report as a starting point and do your own research. But make it real research...not just relying on the GOP nutballs to give talkkking points...(grin)

Question 1) What was TransCanada's selling point to Canada and Canadians?

Question 2) What has been the GOP selling point to the Americans?

Are they the same?

If not, someone, if not both, are lying.

Seems facts is something Van Halen hates with a passion.

Supply and demand? Right? If local supply is plenty -- prices are lower. If local supply is rare.... prices are higher.

A pipeline moves supply from one area to another. So the glut disappears....moved to someplace else.....and no longer is a glut or lower prices.

CONGRATS Van Halen... you are arguing for higher gas and oil prices...As to the journalistic capabilities of the HP, sorry, you seem to be ill-equipped to acknowledge the EXTREMELY professional backgrounds of the journalists who work there.....

But then, if you think Faux, WorldNutballDaily,TownieHall etc are professional.....that explains just how tainted your visionand judgement really is...

Seems the posters have been guzzling too much kool-aid from the GOP again....

They cite market forces.....yet forget that a glut can bring prices down. If the pipeline eliminates the glut..... what happens to the prices ^^^^^^^^

Note the nattering nabobs haven't noting TransCanada and the GOP telling two COMPLETELY AND OPPOSITE reasons to built it...

Another full load of CRAP from the HuffingAndPuffing Post! Supply and demand that one learns in the first year of College proves this false and biased piece of non-reporting to be totally untrue! But of course the reporters that work for the Huffing And Puffing Post didn't even learn Journalism much less Economics 101!

The fact for the first time ever last week that Oil went North in the Oklahoma Pipeline to get refined proves that the Keystone Pipeline is A) needed and B) would cause gasoline prices to fall!

Considering the source is a lawyer for the "Extremist, Liberal Think Tank [that] Attacks More Than It Defends", I'm not surprised by the outcome which does not take into account common sense market forces.

The only reason they want the Keystone pipeline in is so that they can export it as fast as we can make it for them.
