Will Truckers Ditch Diesel?

WSJ -- Rising diesel costs last year forced Waste Management Inc. WM +0.91% to charge customers an extra $169 million, just to keep its garbage trucks fueled. This year, the nation's biggest trash hauler has a new defensive strategy: it is buying trucks that will run on cheaper natural gas.

In fact, the company says 80% of the trucks it purchases during the next five years will be fueled by natural gas. Though the vehicles cost about $30,000 more than conventional diesel models, each will save $27,000-a-year or more in fuel, says Eric Woods, head of fleet logistics for Waste Management. By 2017, the company expects to burn more natural gas than diesel.

"The economics favoring natural gas are overwhelming," says Scott Perry, a vice president at Ryder Systems Inc., R +2.31% one of the nation's l

Diesel is the best fuel for trucks and there is no other fuel, made from crude oil, with a reasonable price that can replace it. Bio diesel is expensive when made from algae or other 'green' alternatives. Natural gas is cheaper for now, it takes more fuel to operate the trucks and what about the price when more and more trucks and cars use this fuel? Keep the price of natural gas low for home heating use.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Cost savings.
Less polluted air.
We don't really need so much gas/diesel. Heck Big Oil is exporting. Who are we kidding.

As multi-mode for intra-continental freight becomes prevalent, the range needed to truck becomes much shorter, from base, to factory, to multi-mode rail yard or dock, back to base. Rarely would that reach 100 miles round trip. If you really needed long range, then a LNG setup makes more sense.

i say take your own trash to the dump and then you don't have to pay wasted management anything....... but did you know they(the county) can now put a lien on your property taxes to make you pay them and you can't take your trash to the dump to avoid inflated pricing on your trash service.even though the state laws say if you can provide the service yourself or find another provider cheaper you don't have to use wasted management.if you don't believe it look up your state law on trash service. basically it is like when the mob use to force homeowners and businesses to use their service only, but instead of the mob our own gov'ment is forcing you to buy another service from one company instead of allowing you to choose.what do they call that a monopoly for wasted management.blah blah blah means no one in gov'ment is listening or they would check into this misuse of power. reminds me of that simpsons episode where they hired homer to get rid of the trash anywhere he can anyway he can. : ) who cares about the mileage how about local govment forcing the use of one company creating a monopoly for that company.hmmmm?

As soon as CNG is more readily available on our major highways you will see more truckers switch off diesel.

But Waste Management will not lower the costs that they charge even if they have huge savings. Trash collections fees will continue to increase.

I doubt it. Unless they can come up with a solution that can haul those heavy loads better and cheaper - and readily available - they won't. Nor would I dump my Diesel to tow my 5th wheel trailer. Diesel is the way to go.

Don't believe that will happen in the near future. To many independents that couldn't swing the initial investments required.
